2026 Dubbed the Year of the Amphibian Adventure.
My key observation from the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these amphibious creatures. Considering a band of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.
A Legacy of Leaping
Amphibians have been far from new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. However, their prevalence has markedly increased in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are legitimate titles centered on frogs.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To understand this trend, I performed a deep dive into the last half-decade of hoppy gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's elevated place in the public consciousness is somewhat evident elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. But, the trend in gaming appears particularly strong.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
In my opinion, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs possess built-in design advantages for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as memorable characters that tend to be a fan favorite in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues enable a host of innovative control schemes.
Many of the showcased games directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance
So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year so far.
If these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we could very well be on the verge of a genuine croaking cultural moment.
