A Tooth Fairy Tale Review: Cartoon Journey with a Sprinkling of Kid-Appropriate Preteen Love Story

Throughout this cartoon journey for preteens, the fairy community focuses on collecting teeth from slumbering youngsters and leaving gold beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a feeling that’s entirely reasonable. He is just slightly more interested in the financial workings of the situation: the fairies hand over the molars to unseen goblins, who provide metal as payment. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he spots a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be not at all the ugly creature he expected.

An Unlikely Connection and Shared Threat

The stage is set for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of young love (though it’s very much suitable for younger kids). The fairy and goblin groups are separated from each other, and nothing fuels the excitement of secrecy to bring people together. The two species portrayed in the film are incredibly similar, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the other. The fairies are said to be entitled sorts, prone to stealing anything they want, while the goblins are reportedly stupid, foul-smelling, and primitive, but are actually intelligent and advanced in technology.

Of course, such a setup needs a shared foe to unite against, and this is duly provided in the form of some nasty spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they serve as fairly bloodthirsty, though not especially competent, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts

You won’t find all that many animated films targeting the kind of audience that is beginning to have early romances, but are not old enough for whatever teenagers are watching in lieu of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to become their new all-time fave, but you could do worse.

A Tooth Fairy Tale releases in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and the rest of the UK beginning October 24.
