Australia's authorities have called off the hunt for a four-year-old child who has been missing in the wilderness for nearly three weeks, after fresh efforts failed to locate any signs of the youngster.

The child was spotted playing outside his family property on a remote rural property in the vicinity of Yunta, about 186 miles from Adelaide, on September 27th.

His family member stepped away for about half an hour before returning, only to realize the child gone, prompting one of the most extensive land and air searches in local history.

Current Status

Police - who do not believe foul play - say they will persist investigating, but that the situation has become a "recovery mission".

Earlier, authorities temporarily scaled back the search, only to resume it on recently alongside 80 military personnel.

"Official Grant Stevens said officials were scanning a wider area based on revised evaluations from medical and rescue specialists, rather than any fresh leads."
